Keeping kids cool in the car

Before I give you all of my tips for keeping children cool in the car, I want to talk about the severity of this.

I'm not asking you to keep your kids cool on car rides for their comfort; it's for their overall safety.

To begin, I want you to think about a time when you were so hot that you felt as if you might pass out.

Multiply that feeling by 3.

Better yet, multiple it by 5 because a child's body can heat up 3 to 5 times faster than an adults.

Like you, I had no idea that this feeling was way more intense for children. I always assumed that they were feeling what we feel.

Unfortunately, this is the thought of many parents which has lead accidental deaths of children. We're losing children to hot car deaths at an average of 37 children per year.

That's 37 sets of parents who will never overcome the guilt. It's 37 young lives who will never know the joy of growing up. Thirty-seven preventable deaths.

Keeping Kids Safe From the Heat in the Car

Thankfully, we have enough resources and knowledge to prevent accidental hot car deaths like these. In fact, the Auto Alliance has launched a campaign encouraging parents and caregivers to ACT:

  • A – Avoid: Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute. And make sure to keep your car locked when you’re not in it so kids don’t get in on their own.

  • C – Create Reminders: Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to your child such as a briefcase, a purse or a cell phone that is needed at your final destination. This is especially important if you’re not following your normal routine.

  • T – Take Action: If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Emergency personnel want you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations. One call could save a life.

Not only do we want to avoid becoming a grieving parent, we don't want to know anyone who is experiencing the accidental death of a child due to heatstroke.
