I typically walk into a new movie without many expectations. I like to give every movie a fair shot. I don't want to be disappointed. However, I had very big expectations for Queen of Katwe. It's a true story and when a true story is brought to the big screen – it has to be good. On top of that, I knew that the incredible cast would appropriately convey this beautiful story of strength and survival. There are so many important Queen of Katwe messages that can be taken away from this film.
Queen of Katwe is based on the vibrant true story of a young girl from the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
1. It makes you appreciate what you have.
I think that every person in America needs to watch Queen of Katwe. We need to understand how incredibly lucky we are. Queen of Katwe is very much a story of survival – a mother doing anything she can to keep her children sheltered and safe; a young girl giving everything she has to work for a better tomorrow for her family; a sister depending on a man to keep her afloat; a man giving up career opportunities to help children pursue their dreams. Queen of Katwe is a story that everyone needs to hear specifically so we can learn to appreciate what we have. We have resources and organizations available to us that other countries don't have. Life may not always be easy, but at least we have the choice to make ourselves better.
2. It teaches children to chase their dreams.
Sometimes dreams can feel so out of reach, especially if we are less fortunate. Teenagers are turning down colleges because they don't think their family can afford it. Queen of Katwe teaches our children to work hard, fight, and never give up on themselves because dreams can come true – even if you come from nothing. Everyone has the ability to change the world and Queen of Katwe teaches kids that.
3. It reminds you to never give up hope.
If there's one thing that you can take away from Queen of Katwe, it's to never give up hope. Sometimes it feels like the world is crumbling all around you, but don't give up hope. Lupita's family went from living in a shack, to being homeless, to living in an abandoned building, to living in an actual house – with a yard! Phiona (the legendary master chess player) went from selling corn on the streets to competing in nation-wide competitions – and winning. Anything could happen! You're never too small to be wonderful. Hard work can take you anywhere you allow it to.
Queen of Katwe is now in select theaters and will be in theaters everywhere 9/30
